It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas!

For lots of folks around the Southeast and particularly in Georgia, the first snow fall isn't only an event, it’s a magical event. Kids and adults alike go to bed in one kind of world and wake up in an entirely different one. During the holidays this can be quite the enchanting experience, especially from your warm cabin in the North Georgia Mountains!

Since we don’t take snow for granted in these parts, the SoCo team thought it would be a good idea to give you some family-friendly activities to enjoy in the snow this season.

Build a fire and make some S'mores’ – Several of our cabins offer wood burning fireplaces and/ or outdoor fire features such as fireplaces or fire rings. Be sure to ask one of our agents what options you have.  Most grocery stores sell S'mores kits that have everything you need to make an unforgettable family memory. Come on guys… they can even be romantic too <wink, wink>

Scavenger Hunt – This is one that the kids will love. Get some of your favorite food coloring and add colors to ice cubes. Then, place the ice cubes in the snow in a designated place and have your children and their friends search for the colored ice cubes. Try making one cube rare by coloring it a different color than the rest, and hand out a prize to whoever finds it.

Catch snowflakes – If you find that it snowing good and hard and will continue to do so for a while, throw a piece of black construction paper in the freezer until it becomes cold. Then go outside and try to catch snowflakes on it. Have your kids look at the snowflakes with magnifying glasses for extra fun.

Make Maple Syrup Taffy Snow Cones – Pick up some paper cones at the local grocery store, and have your kids pack snow into them tightly. While they are doing this, boil pure maple syrup until it is about 252 F. Drizzle the syrup on the snow, and let your kids dig in. Note: In order for this to work right, make sure you get pure maple syrup, not a maple-flavored alternative.

There’s nothing quite like enjoying a getaway vacation during the winter in one of our North Georgia cabin rentals. Whether you want to stay inside your luxurious log home or you want to get outside and experience all that there is to see and do in Blue Ridge, you will cherish the memories that you and your family will build.
