Holiday Travel Tips

Oh, what a wonderful holiday season it’s going to be here in the Blue Ridge mountains! We hope that you’re excited, because we certainly are.

North Georgia comes alive during this time of the year; between the stunning colors of fall foliage in October, the warm feelings and delicious turkey in during the Thanksgiving season and all of the festive magic swirling around in the air during the holidays in December and January, there has never been a better time to visit Blue Ridge, GA.

Because Blue Ridge is such a sought-after destination from October through December, thousands of folks from around the country will be traveling to town just like you and your family, which can make for congested roadways and airports. While travel headaches and stresses are common during this time of the year, fret not – we’ve got some holiday travel tips that are sure to make your journey to Blue Ridge as easy as it’s ever been.

Plan Ahead
It may sound like a no-brainer, but if you’re flying make sure you leave enough time to find your terminal and get through security. Lines will be long, and nothing is worse than rushing through a busy airport with only minutes to spare before your flight leaves. Conversely, if you’re driving, use apps like Google Maps and resources like local news websites to find out about road delays like construction and car accidents that might set you back timewise.

Pack Smart
You know your travel mates and your family better than anyone– pack items that you know they will need on your flight, whether it’s games for the kids or earbuds for teens. Traveling isn’t always fun, but you can take measures to ensure that it is as comfortable as possible. If you’re flying, make sure you heed TSA’s rules about liquids and gels: 3.4-ounce (or smaller) containers. You can pack your items in a quart-size, zip-up plastic bag and place them in your luggage. Speaking of luggage, try to avoid checking your bags if possible. All of these tips can help save you time and frustration.

Snack Along the Way
If you hear your tummy growl, don’t ignore it! Make sure you eat protein and complex carbs (aka brain food) to keep your mind fresh and your energy levels high. Nuts, granola bars, trail mixes, and other items can work great for keeping hunger at bay and your mind focused on getting to your Blue Ridge cabin rental.

Travel Early or Late in the Day
If your holiday travel includes a flight with an airline, try to fly earlier in the day rather than late in the day, as statistics show that planes that travel earlier have better on-time arrival performance. If you will be driving a long distance to Blue Ridge, you may want to consider traveling later at night, when most folks are off the road.

JUST BREATHE!
Canceled flights. Flat tires. Lost luggage. GPS problems. We can feel your anxiety levels rising from here!  These are only a few of the horrors of travel, but guess what? Holiday travel stress is as much of a tradition as sweet potato pie and Thanksgiving turkey. When it’s all said and done, the roadblocks that you overcome in your travels will make for added humor in the stories and memories you share with friends and family.  When things get a tad overwhelming, take a deep breath. Hold it in for a few seconds and let it out. Feel better? Try it again a few more times. Breathing deeply is a sure-fire way to ease stress levels and keep your mind focused on the task at hand.
